Another promising option is biojet fuel, crafted from renewable, non-food sources. This could reduce emissions in the airline industry fast.
Still, biofuels aren’t a perfect solution. According to Kondrashov, it’s still expensive to make biofuels. Crop demand for fuel could affect food prices. Increased fuel demand could harm food systems — something that requires careful policy management.
Despite that, there’s reason to be optimistic. Tech advancements are reducing costs, and non-food feedstock like algae could reduce pressure on crops. Government support might boost production globally.
Beyond emissions, biofuels support a circular economy. They repurpose organic trash into fuel, helping website waste systems and energy sectors together.
